FLF Budget-Friendly Finds: Sprouts Farmer's Market

Last week, I shared that we're getting a Sprouts Farmer's Market here in Durham! When I asked  for recommendations of your fave Sprouts' products on social media, you guys did not disappoint!

"The sales are amazing and the best part is that Wednesday is double-sale day. You get all the deals from the previous week and all the deals from the new week doubled up in one day. Their produce prices are the best I've ever seen." - Gillian from Florida

"Just got one here! Good sales!" - Leslie in North Carolina

"We have these in Colorado. They rock! Cheap, too!" - Stephanie in Colorado

"They have great prices on produce and if you buy something and don't like it, you can return in no questions asked." - Meagan in Texas

And this my fave recommendation/comment of all:

"Probably not what you're looking for but they have the world's BEST gummy bears...sold by the pound...it's dangerous!" - Erica in Texas

YAAAAASSSSS. I mean, sometimes you just need some gummy bears, AM I RIGHT?!

In all seriousness, this place is going to be a game changer for FLF girls who are budget-conscious and want great deals on good organic foods and natural products. (And also for those days when we just need a handful of gummy bears or candy corn dang it!)

Since it is WEDNESDAY - and that's Double-Sale Day! - I decided to head up to the Sprouts in North Raleigh (our store here in Durham doesn't open until August 22) to round up some FLF finds that are:

1) Great for fueling our active lifestyles; and,

2) Easy on the wallet, because there are few things we despise more than the misconception that eating well has to cost a fortune! Even when it's NOT Wednesday, around 1/3 of the entire store is on sale at any given time! Healthy eating is not a luxury and shopping at Sprouts is definitely a smart strategy for saving money.

Here are 5 ways Fat Loss Foodies can SHOP SMART at Sprouts. I've highlighted some budget-friendly faves that are going to be in my cart frequently as well!

1. Stock Up on Quality Protein.

Hit the meat department and buy what's on sale, then plan your meals for the week around what you find. This week alone, grass-fed beef, filet mignon, and boneless, skinless chicken thighs were all on sale, in addition to sliced turkey, roast beef, and chicken breast in the deli. Another great way to save money is buying value packs. Buying in bulk is always a money saver, especially when it's on sale! Just toss it in the freezer until you're ready to use it.

The protein powder aisle is also STACKED with options. Seriously, whatever kind of protein powder you use, I bet it's here.

FLF's eat a LOT of protein and we eat it at every meal! Finding ways to save money on protein is huge.

2. Farm-Fresh Produce for Less

After we stock up the protein, next up on our FLF grocery list is always produce. A fat loss diet is high in protein, fiber, and water - and this is where fruits and veggies come in.

To save money on weekly grocery bills, we coach our clients to buy produce that's on sale and in season. For example, buy berries in the Spring and Summer when they're in season. Buy squash and apples in the Fall.

Another bonus: Fresh produce here is 20-25% below supermarket prices.

For example, today I stocked up on asparagus, zucchini, grape tomatoes, cucumber, bell peppers, and blackberries and blueberries. In addition to being on sale, these veggies are all non-starchy veggies that I can use on healthy meals throughout the week; everything from scrambles and stir-fries to salads. The berries are great alongside a high protein breakfast like a veggie scramble, or with a square of dark chocolate for dessert.

Dinner Salad for 2 after our first shopping trip to Sprouts: mixed greens, cucumber, grape tomatoes, cherry peppers, avocado, rotisserie chicken. Seasoned with salt & pepper and tossed with Tessemae's Habanero Ranch.

3. Shop the Bulk and Frozen Foods Sections

While the produce department is a huge highlight of shopping at Sprouts, there's zero shame in using frozen fruits and veggies to round out your produce haul! I love using frozen berries, cherries, and peaches in post-workout shakes.

Smoothie game will be strong here. Frozen fruits and veggies are an awesome way to stretch your grocery bill, as are store-brand products.

In the bulk foods section, you can find other healthy staples like dry beans, grains, spices, nuts, and yes, even some sweet treats like those gummy bears;) Because there's no packaging, you can buy as little or as much as you need for a reduced cost.

Throughout the store, there are Sprouts-brand products like nut butter, pasta, soups, and other pantry staples. On this trip, I snagged Sprouts-brand peanut butter (team creamy & salted PB) and am happy to report this stuff is BOMB. Buying store-brand products is a great way to shave money off your grocery bill without sacrificing taste or quality. (And hey - if for some reason you don't like it, you can return it. No questions asked.)

4. Save the Best for Last: Healthy Snacks and Fun Foods

A personal favorite of mine right now that I CANNOT STAY OUT OF: these Coconut Chocolate Rolls. Nine of these little babies are 140 calories and they're gluten- and dairy-free. Not bad for when you want a sweet little treat!

Most of our grocery cart is filled with protein, produce, and other healthy, fat loss-friendly foods. But sometimes...you just want to eat something a little fun! I totally get it, and we are all about some variety:)

Enter foods and bevvies like: Kombucha, protein bars, grain-free tortilla chips, almonds and other nuts. Sprouts has ALL THE THINGS: so many fun, specialty food finds - and I've been told their buyers look far and wide to find and try new products!!

Every section of the store had great options for those with food allergies and special dietary needs (gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, vegetarian, etc.) On this trip, we snagged some dark chocolate bars, and the dog got some snacks, too :)

P.S. There's an App for that!

The Sprouts App is SO COOL. You can use their "build a shopping list" feature to organize your shopping before you even get to the store, and it saves your list for repeat use. There's a "Recipes" section that includes categories for Paleo, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free recipes, where you can add the ingredients from the recipe right to your shopping list.

To answer the NIGHTLY question of "what do you want to do for dinner tonight?" I just pulled up the app, checked the sales at my local store, and started clicking to add the items to my list. It's how we decided on a big salad with rotisserie chicken for our post-workout dinner tonight.

Ugh! I just love good apps! Almost as much as I love convenience and making lists and saving money;) Learn more about all the cool features of the Sprouts App HERE. Download it and start building that shopping list!
