Protein Bar Review: Fat Loss Foodies' Top 5 Favorites!

In a world where protein bars now take up an entire aisle at the grocery store, HOW DO YOU CHOOSE?

We get asked this question all the time, so we thought it was time to break it down for you! 

At Fat Loss Foodies, we have three guidelines for protein bars:

1. Must contain quality, real food ingredients.

2. Must meet the Metabolic Effect Label Rule.

3. Must taste great.

We've rounded up five of our favorite protein bars below that meet these guidelines. While we know that while cooking and eating real food is best for body change, it's not always practical. We work with BUSY WOMEN, and in the real world, most of them can't always have meals from home. 

Enter: convenience foods like protein bars.

We use the Metabolic Effect Label Rule to decipher which bars are going to have a positive impact on blood sugar and fat-burning, and which ones are really just candy bars with a fancy label and higher price tag.

Should We Eat Protein Bars Every Day?

Lean women eat mostly real food. (You probably knew we were gonna say that...)

BUT, within the last couple years, more companies than ever are meeting the high consumer demand for better quality food with - you guessed it - better quality food!

I remember back when I started living an FLF lifestyle 7-8 years ago, there were maybe a couple shelves of protein bars at the grocery store. Most were loaded with artificial, chemical ingredients, and frankly - just tasted awful.

Now there are WALLS of protein bars, and the selection seems to be growing by the week! Speciality food companies are doing amazing work with real, whole foods, transforming them into packaged convenience foods that are portable and great tasting.

If one of these protein bars works for your busy lifestyle and helps you stay on track, we say DO YOU and go for it! 

 

These 5 bars meet our guidelines (quality ingredients + fits the ME label rule + tastes good) and we recommend them all whole-heartedly.

Try them all. Find the ones YOU love and then stock up! Place them in your pantry, gym bag, desk drawer, brief case, diaper bag - anywhere you're likely to get caught in a hangry situation and make less-than-great choices. It's better to eat a 200-calorie protein bar NOW than to not eat and destroy the entire contents of your pantry or hotel mini bar later.

Favorite Flavors: Chocolate Coconut hits that "Almond Joy" flavor and White Chocolate Raspberry is pure voodoo. How on EARTH to they make that bar taste that amazing with those macros?! Vanilla Almond is just straight-up lovely.

Why we love them: Once you taste one you will instantly know why we are fans of these bars. They just taste amazing! For flavor and texture, these are pretty hard to beat. They're made with grass fed whey protein and also contain a small dose of Omega 3s from fish oil - but don't worry they don't taste fishy at all! 2. Epic Bars

Allergens: Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free

Favorite Flavors: Bison Bacon Cranberry and Chicken Sriracha

Why we like them: Coach Jenn loves these bars because - as a Sugar Burner (i.e. someone who is very sensitive to carbs), she has a hard time finding bars that don't contain dried fruit or other sweet ingredients. (Note: some Epic bars contained dried cranberries or cherries but many do not!) These savory bars are pure protein and work great for her busy, on-the-go lifestyle as a Les Mills National Trainer and Reebok Athlete. We've seen Epic Bars popping up in airport convenience shops, Sheetz gas stations, and other places you don't expect to find high-quality protein sources. This means you never have an excuse to reach for that candy bar!

Metabolic Effect Label Rule: 13 g. carbs - 12 g. protein - 5 g. fiber = -4!

Why we like them: If you are sensitive to carbohydrates and need a low-carb/higher-fat sweet tooth fix, these Bulletproof Bars are also going to be your new best friend. With just 2 grams of sugar and 12 g. of protein, these bars are perfect for our Sugar Burner clients who need to watch their sugar/carb intake but also crave the occasional cookie. The Vanilla Shortbread is made with cashew butter and has a "melt in your mouth"-quality that I find pairs well with a cup of hot black tea or coffee. My husband stocks up on these before his work trips so he always has a good snack on hand!

4. RX Bars

Allergens: Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free

Favorite Flavors: Chocolate Sea Salt is their top seller and it's our fave because - well, it kinda tastes like a really big Tootsie roll, but better. Maple Sea Salt is perfect if you're craving something a little bit sweet and a little bit salty.

Metabolic Effect Label Rule: 24 g. carbs - 5 g. fiber - 12 g. protein = 7!

Why we like them: RX Bars have just a handful of really simple ingredients like egg whites, dates, nuts, spices, and fruit. That's it. All real food. 5. No Cow Bars

Allergens: Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free

Favorite Flavors: Our favorites are the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (it has cocoa nibs instead of actual chocolate chips!), Blueberry Cobbler, and Lemon Meringue Pie.

Metabolic Effect Label Rule: 25 g. carbs - 20 g. protein - 18 g. fiber = -13! 

Why We Love Them: 20+ grams of protein, 5-6 grams of fat, 18 grams of fiber and only 1 gram of sugar!? Come on. How do you beat those numbers?

We were skeptical of No Cow bars at first, since bars made with brown rice and pea protein tend to have a funky taste. Not these though; No Cow bars taste great!

No Cow bars also make our little entrepreneur hearts skip a beat: they were created by an 18-year-old named Daniel who found that most protein bars made his stomach hurt. (Turns out: dairy allergy.) When he couldn't find a protein bar that was dairy-free and low in sugar, he made his own!
